Sick Days...Their Proper Use

Rialto’s teaching employees generally receive 10 days that may be used for sick leave. These days are provided so that you may stay home when you are ill.

Illness may manifest itself in many ways. Physical illness is easily identified. Sometimes illness may be induced by stress. Nevertheless, stress induced illness qualifies for sick leave. Stress may leave you exhausted and drained as much as or more so than a physical illness. Ultimately, stress may manifest itself with physical symptoms.

If you are sick, regardless of the cause, do yourself, your students, and your colleagues a favor—STAY HOME!

A Word about Period Coverage and Off-Track Subbing…

When a colleague is ill you may be asked to substitute during your prep period. Prep periods were provided by contract so that you would have time to perform important work-related duties without an inordinate amount of stress. You have the right to decline to perform period coverage. In the absence of an emergency (flood, fire, earthquake…) you have the right to decline. If you value your prep time, simply say, "No, thank you." Eventually the requests to surrender your prep will stop.

Elementary teachers need their rest. It is challenging and exhausting to complete the many reports, plans, data reviews, etc., that are demanded of all. When you are off-track, allow yourself the chance to recuperate. Enjoy your hobbies, family and friends. Relax. You do not need to sub while off-track, nor can you be required to do so. It is strictly your choice.
